Formative Assessments
When incorporated into classroom practice, the formative assessment process provides information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are still happening. The process serves as practice for the student and a check for understanding during the learning process. The formative assessment process guides teachers in making decisions about future instruction.

- Examples of Formative assessments that may be used in the classroom to collect evidence of student learning: observations, exit slips, graphic organizers, quizzes,discussions

Summative Assessments
To assess students' overall knowledge in a subject, having a more traditional assessment that mirrors the standardized test format. Teachers use a common rubric to assess, anchor sets to calibrate, and use the results to formally monitor student progress as part of a regular data team process. 

- Examples of Summative assessments include: DIBELS screeners, Words their Way spelling inventory, NWEA, Measures of Academic Progress, gr. 3& 4 and Smarter Balance Assessment, gr. 3 & 4.,Development Reading Assessment 2 and or Teachers College Reading and Writing Projects reading assessments.
